COMSTAR is a five-year project, funded by the European Research Council, to investigate the consequences of early-life adversity for adult health and behaviour. Uniquely, we are investigating the same topic comparatively in humans and in European starlings. We want to know whether early stress and adversity speed up ageing, which we measure chiefly through changes in the length of telomeres, the protective DNA ‘caps’ at the ends of our chromosomes. We also want to understand how individuals adjust their behavioural decisions according to their bodily state and their biological age.
